Psuedo Reality

The light danced across my eyes as I caught a glimpse of your smile
Each step you take closer to me causes the heat to rise
Your kiss is like sweet strawberry dipped in Godiva chocolate
It causes me to wrestle with whether I want you to continue or to stop this
Every time you breathe it takes my breath away
The touch of your skin is like pure silk spun just for me
I reach for you but you pull away
My heart aches and my lips quiver in anticipation of your next kiss
As I leaned over to touch your face you disappeared
I opened my eyes to face the reality that it was all a dream.
No, no I screamed take me back to my dream, to my perfect lover
I guess it was not meant to be so I'll hold on to my pseudo-reality.

Love's Voyage

Here's a snippet from one of the stories in my book Love's Voyage by Paulette Bernard.  It is a collection of short stories.

                                    Broken but Not Destroyed
My story is common to many women in the past, but I feel it's special enough to share with you. I am an over 40-year mother of 4, all boys, of course. Anyone who has ever raised boys knows it is not an easy task. Their father and I were together for 20 years, and I thought life couldn’t get any better. We were both relatively successful, lived in a nice house, and drove pretty decent cars. He and I barely spoke a bad word to each other, so I was quite surprised when the boys and I came home to find the home we had lived in for 12 years completely empty.

I immediately thought someone had robbed us, so I called the police. They said it did not look like anyone broke in, but they would check with the neighbors to see if they saw anything. The surprises continued when a neighbor told the police that the owner had a moving truck and told her he was relocating.

The boys and I are still shocked about these actions. We tried figuring out what happened, but it only made us angrier. When we discovered that he actually moved everything out from under us, I immediately called my realtor to check to make sure we still owned our home. The realtor told me that he was on his way over to put the sign in front of the house.

He said my ex-husband signed the papers to put the house on the market. That was definitely my breaking point. I fell to my knees and cried. My boys huddled over me and began crying too. My eldest son got himself together and began talking some sense into all of us. “Momma didn’t daddy say he had to put the house in your name to get a lower interest rate. Can he still sell it if it’s in your name? He asked me.

In the Shadow of a Substitute Son

A Hard Decision - snippet

Once again, Sidney is facing the family caring for her son. They exchanged pleasantries before entering the courtroom. Within minutes the bailiff was calling out for them to rise. Larry’s mother began to sweat under her arms and down her back. Martin told them to sit down, trying not to look directly at Sidney. He began, “Cases involving children are often difficult to give a ruling because as Judges, every decision we make can have consequences and, in this case, a boy’s welfare could be compromised. Miss Washington, you want this court to vacate a previous decision, so your son could return home. Mr. and Mrs. Grayeson, you want the child to remain with you and gain full custody. All parties have shown great love towards the boy, and both sides presented compelling arguments to justify their requests. However, it is up to me to make the right decision based on the evidence and my conversation with the young man you all call Larry.” Hearing that he spoke to her son was a surprise to Sidney. She whispered to Richard, “When did he speak to my baby?”
Richard patted her hand to refocus on the Judge, who was still talking, “I must consider his wishes and what I felt would give him the best path for continuous growth. Since he expressed his desire to be with his mother and the Grayeson, Larry will return to his mother at the end of the school year. Ms. Washington will maintain visitation until then.” As soon as the judge announced his decision, Michael Sr. jumped up....
